Knowing Types of Beagles

Beagles have charmed a many pet-lovers around the world. Among their secrets are their charming eyes, sweet loyalty, intelligence, courage and friendliness. There are various types of Beagles that spawned from cross breeding. You can tell by their size. In the past, Beagles were so small you can fit them in a glove, thus the name Glove Beagle or Pocket Beagle. However, cross breeding produced larger breeds with color variations over time.

The Patch Beagles have combinations of either lemon and white or red and white. These types of Beagles were intended for hunting and they are normally fast-runners. Meanwhile, common Beagles vary from colors cream, white, brown, blue mottle, red, tan, to lemon.

Size also matters in terms of distinguishing Beagle types. Females normally grow up from 13-15 inches while the males grow from 14-16 inches tall. It is very rare that Beagles grow larger than 16 inches. The American Kennel Club (AKC) recognizes this as the standard Beagle size. As of today, there are about 130 types of Beagles acknowledged by AKC as pure breeds.

The coat is another significant quality that identifies a type of Beagle. Basically, the coat of a Beagle is waterproof, tight and short. The distinction is detected in the texture of the coat which may either be fine and silky or rough. There are probably hundreds of types of Beagles around the world and more mixes can possibly be produced with cross-breeding but you will always find the authentic beagle qualities in them physically and behaviorally.
